3 Stud Finders & How to Use Them

3 Different Stud Finders & How to Use Them

When hanging something particularly heavy, such as shelves, frames or mirrors, it is  imperative to install your hanging hardware (such as screws) into the studs whenever possible.

Typically studs are 16 inches apart from one another. However, sometimes finding these studs can be a challenge. But with the right stud finder, your DIY projects will be much easier. In this post, we will show you 3 different types of stud finders and how to use them. In conjunction with Hang It Perfect™, the right stud finder will help you hang like a pro!

The Zircon StudSensor HD55 Stud Finder

The Zircon StudSensor HD55 Stud Finder is a standard choice when it comes to stud detection, but in the best way! It works in typical fashion by sensing the edges of the wall studs, up to 1 ½” deep. By determining the right & left edges of the stud, you can then determine the stud midpoint which is where you’ll want to install the hanging hardware.  A great feature of this stud finder is the easy-to-read LCD display that gives a warning signal when you get too close to live AC electrical wiring!

In this video, ZirconTV shows us how to use the Zircon StudSensor to effectively find the studs.

RYOBI LED Whole Stud Detector

The RYOBI LED Whole Stud Detector works to detect the WHOLE stud rather than the edges. The LED light sensors light up as you reach a stud’s edge, then continue to light up as you proceed across the whole stud. This allows you to determine the stud midpoint for hardware installation.

In this video Jodie Marks with Today’s Homeowner shows us how to use the RYOBI LED Whole Stud Detector.

C.H. Hanson Magnetic Stud Finder

The C.H. Hanson Magnetic Stud Finder works with magnets and not with batteries. The stud detection is accomplished by moving the device in "S" movements along  the wall. The magnets react to the nails or screws beneath the drywall and magnetically ‘stick’  to them as to identify the ideal place for hardware installation.

In this video YouTube user Esquire the Second shows us how to use the C.H. Hanson Magnetic Stud Finder to complete our home projects.

These 3 stud finders are different, but they accomplish the same goal of detecting wall studs. BUT... If you have the perfect spot on the wall for your new mirror or piece of art, and there are no studs located within reach, consider using a wall anchor to ensure that what you’re hanging will remain secure.
